About Display Foundry and the People Behind it

Thanks for reading. - Connor Burton, Founder

Why does Display Foundry exist?

Display Foundry was founded in Canberra once I realised Display Painting in Australia was an extremely niche hobby compared to the rest of the world. When I was around thirteen I got into Warhammer 40K, and my favourite part of the hobby has always been painting. But it was only when I was around twenty-eight that I discovered that people were painting Busts, Figures and Models not to play games, but simply as an expression of personal art. I was disappointed it took me so long to realise that was even a possibility. I started Display Foundry to grow display painting as a hobby and art form in Australia, to ensure people with stories like mine aren't missing out.
This is going to be achieved by putting every cent possible back into the community and the business for the foreseeable future. Sponsored events, lessons, free sculpts and painting materials. Let's grow this community together.

What problem in the Australian display painting scene are we solving?

The Australian display painting scene has some truly incredibly talented painters- but I noticed that many people, including myself, were unable to buy sculpts from famous international artists due to prohibitively expensive shipping costs. I also noticed that when looking for plinths, specific paints, or nice brushes, I was told to go to many different retailers, even some Facebook groups. It made it a little frustrating when all I wanted to do was just start. Display Foundry solves this issue in three ways:

  • Ordering wholesale from international artists, allowing shipping costs to be minimised significantly.
  • Doing drops, preallocated stock means we can almost eliminate shipping costs altogether by absorbing that cost into the business, rather than your wallet.
  • Being a one-stop shop where you can find all you need to get into Display Painting or restock your supplies.

Are we a retailer, curator, platform, or something else?

Display Foundry is a curator first and retailer second. We do not have a physical store at the moment, but I am very active in the Australian Display Painting groups so you may see me in person in Brisbane or Canberra. If you see me, come say Hi. Let me know if you have any desired products and I'll reach out to the suppliers internationally.

What standards determine which products we stock?

We only stock products that we are certain professional Display Painters will be satisfied with. This is true no matter the price point. If you are a beginner with a limited budget, you can be sure that your money will be well spent.

How do you plan to help the community?

I am so excited to share this amazing hobby with as many people as possible. I have spoken to several Australian Display Painters Guilds about:

  • Sponsoring their monthly meetups so they can use larger spaces and get the word out more.
  • Hiring teachers to provide lessons.
  • Paying artists to create learning materials for all to share.
  • Creating a "Paint Library" at all Display Painters Guilds where newbies can get access to all the paints they need.
  • Donating sculpts to Guilds that they will give out to new painters.
  • Helping Australian Designers find manufacturers to produce their sculpts.
  • Listening to community suggestions.

Display Foundry is just getting started.

Can I sell my own sculpts through Display Foundry?

You absolutely can. You can produce them yourself or we can arrange manufacturing while you focus on the designs.
